With the imminent transfer of Matheus Cunha from Atletico Madrid to Wolverhampton Wanderers, his father sounds radiant about it.
The player’s dad Carmelo had a word with Globo Esporte about the move, and made it clear that he supported his son in the decision of joining the Molineux side.
The conversation started with his father saying Cunha couldn’t succeed at Atletico Madrid because of manager Diego Simeone.
According to Carmelo, it’s the manager’s fault that the striker couldn’t score any goals this season.
“In Simeone’s system, there’s no way any striker can prosper. That’s very difficult,” Carmelo told Globo Esporte.
Carmelo then pointed out that Wolves’ new manager Julen Lopetegui had been working on this signing for a while, hoping that the coach will make his son succeed at the Molineux.
“He’s going to a good coach, who has been calling him frequently. An international coach. We just hope that this challenge is only successful.”
“This proposal to buy Matheus appeared, and they couldn’t say no. Perhaps the owner of Atlético wanted him to continue, and the fans too, but they need to make money. He was already well established in Madrid, but they are the bones of the trade. It will be an arrival with a lot of protagonism, and we only wish him luck. May he develop a great work in England.”
With Wolves currently standing on the bottom of the Premier League table, Cunha’s father acknowledged that the player has a complicated challenge ahead, but is hopeful that the adaptation will happen quickly and everything will go fine for them to escape from relegation this season.
“I think it was extraordinary for Matheus Cunha. I think it will be a challenge, but I look forward to it.”
Even though Wolverhampton are still to officially announce the signing, the player has already made his farewell from Atletico Madrid.
