Last summer, Newcastle United signed Yankuba Minteh from Danish side Odense Boldklub and immediately sent him out on loan to Feyenoord.
The loan move has paid off for all parties as the winger scored 11 goals and registered six assists from 36 games this season. As of now, Minteh will have to return to Newcastle in the summer.
The Eredivisie side will host Excelsior on Sunday and Feyenoord Pings question whether that will be the Newcastle owned player’s last outing with the club.
On April 22nd, we covered claims from the Dutch press that Feyenoord will do everything to try and retain the 19-year-old beyond this season.
Former Dutch midfielder Robert Maaskant, currently an advisor at BSV Boeimeer, has now urged the Eredivisie side to keep the Gambian. He mentioned this while speaking to FC Rijnmond, relayed by Feyenoord Pings.
“Why not, you should always make that attempt. Players with pace and an assist and who can score a goal are few. He has intensity of play in him. He’s used to it here now, so I would give it another try if I were Feyenoord,” he said.
Voetbal International journalist Martijn Krabbendam, who covers the Dutch club, insists that Eddie Howe’s side will take Minteh on their pre-season tour and then make a decision on his future.
Krabbendam is also of the belief that extending his stay at Feyenoord would benefit both parties.
“He’s just going to report to Newcastle, then he’ll go to Asia for a training camp, I thought, and then they’ll try to bring him back. Those conversations will be had but Newcastle want to see him. They want to see what he’s like in training, in such a group,” Krabbendam explained.
“We also know that he’s not yet ready for the top of the Premier League. Another season at Feyenoord and at least eight Champions League matches, which is also a great option for them.”
