Gavin Bazunu was a starter at Southampton until he ruptured his Achilles tendon in April 2024. The goalkeeper spent the rest of last year on the sidelines and regained full fitness in January.
Meanwhile, Southampton signed Aaron Ramsdale last summer and he has been their No.1 this season.
In the winter market, Southampton let Bazunu join Standard Liège on loan until the end of this season.
Het Belang van Limburg state the 23-year-old’s ‘adventure is over’ in Belgium. He picked up a knee injury earlier this month and has already returned to Southampton to continue his rehabilitation.
Sudinfo also report the Republic of Ireland international has left Standard Liège earlier than expected.
The two clubs maintain a good relationship due to Moussa Djenepo’s sale to the Saints in 2023. This helped the Jupiler Pro League side to sign Bazunu on loan without a purchase option.
The report says the Southampton man’s arrival stopped Matthieu Epolo’s development at Standard Liège.
Bazunu played eight games, keeping one clean sheet and conceding 15 goals. Sudinfo say he ‘hasn’t been reassuring at all’ since he arrived in Belgium, meaning the stopper wasn’t convincing.
With Ramsdale around, Southampton, who are relegated from the Premier League, have to make a decision on Bazunu’s future in the summer.
