When Vasco da Gama managed to get Andrey Santos loaned from Chelsea to use him for a few more months, the signing was very much celebrated by the Brazilian club.
Since the midfielder couldn’t get a work permit to play for the Blues, that was a great chance his old club had to have him back, even if for a small period.
It turns out that Andrey Santos hasn’t been doing great at Vasco. He used to be a star at the time he was sold to Chelsea, but his comeback was a little disappointing for now.
Last night, his side were eliminated from the Copa do Brasil by ABC, a second division side. Outlet Globo Esporte rated the midfielder 4.5 out of ten, and many fans complained about his recent performances. After the match, Vasco manager Mauricio Barbieri talked about his situation.
“I’m satisfied, yes. There has been a controversy about this and I don’t understand. I don’t understand how he can be called up to the main Brazilian national team and he can’t play for Vasco. He’s a 19-year-old boy, even doing everything he’s done. Even being sold to Chelsea for that amount,” said Mauricio Barbieri (via Globo Esporte).
“He’s a boy who needs to play, develop and at times he will fluctuate. I don’t think he had a bad game today or the previous game. He is a player who has games, who finds passes. I don’t understand the questioning about Andrey, honestly.”
Andrey is loaned by Chelsea to Vasco until the end of June. Next week he’ll join the Brazilian national team’s first team, and there’s expectation he’ll soon be called up for the U20 World Cup in May. Those caps should all help him get the work permit to feature for the Blues.
