Charly Alcaraz was unaware of Everton’s negotiations with Flamengo for him and had initially intended to stay with the Brazilian club.
That’s according to UOL and journalist Raisa Simplicio, who both report on the matter today and the fact Alcaraz had not intended to return to England.
The midfielder is set to fly to England today ahead of undergoing a medical with Everton on Sunday. They have agreed a loan deal with Flamengo until the end of the season that will become permanent after he makes eight appearances for the Toffees.
The deal was a surprise one on Thursday night, with Flamengo announcing the move on social media and catching most off guard. It seems Alcaraz was among them.
UOL report that he wanted to stay at Flamengo but gave up on the idea after talking to manager Filipe Luís.
The newspaper states that the latter was the central figure of the transfer after a ‘controversial negotiation’ for the player.
They explain that Alcaraz was unaware of talks with Everton, who dealt directly with Flamengo for him. Not even the player’s agent, Sebastian Lopez, knew the details of the agreement initially.
Alcaraz did not want to return to England initially, but Filipe Luiz called him for a conversation and made it clear that he was not in his plans moving forward. Alcaraz then accepted the move to Everton.
The Brazilians are yet to reveal how much the permanent option is, but they paid around $20m including commissions for the Argentine in the summer so it is likely they will want as much of that returned as possible.
This is backed up by Raisa Simplicio, who confirms Alcaraz was unaware of the negotiation with Everton until Flamengo accepted the offer. She also states that Filipe Luis made it clear to Alcaraz he would not be playing much this season, so he has decided to go to Everton instead.
He’ll now be hoping David Moyes thinks differently, and he can get back on track in the Premier League.
