Earlier this year German magazine Kicker quizzed Hoffenheim’s Mark Uth specifically on interest from Tottenham and Southampton. The striker confirmed he was aware of interest, and was happy about it: “There is interest, nothing more. It is definitely an acknowledgment. But I now focus on football.”
Interest from both Tottenham and Southampton seemed somewhat surprising. The two clubs are often linked to the same players, a product of Mauricio Pochettino and several recruiting staff leaving the Saints for Spurs, but this target wasn’t an obvious one.
Uth is a striker who usually plays in that position, he’s not pushed out wide, and yet he’s only scored 6 Bundesliga goals so far this season. It has to be acknowledged he’s only played 838 minutes, but if the 25 year old can’t be first choice consistently for Hoffenheim then he’s hardly likely to be at Tottenham or Southampton.
Uth’s Hoffenheim contract expires in June 2018, and the player has again been talking about his future, with reference to a renewal. Kicker quote him as saying: “We are in talks, TSG is the first point of contact. I feel good here, you have to see what the future brings.
“I do not know yet whether I’ll be here for another year. Many things are still open at the moment, we will keep the talks up and then we’ll have a look.”
Kicker once again reference English interest, but this looks very much like a player pressuring his club and trying to flush out others.
Tottenham and Southampton would surely be looking at other targets.
