Flamengo fans have ‘started a movement’ to try and convince the club to sign Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara, after he admitted he’s a fan of the club.
That’s according to ESPN Brazil, who explain today how a potential move for the Spanish midfielder became the ‘most talked about topic in Brazil’.
They explain that while the club are finalising a deal to sign Nicolás de la Cruz, their fans have ‘started a movement’ on social media this week for another name to be added to their team’s midfielder, Thiago Alcantara.
The hashtag #ThiagoAlcantaraNoFlamengo quickly topped the charts on X (formerly Twitter) and was the ‘most talked about topic’ on the social media network.
That led to questions about what was going on and ESPN explain the whole thing was ‘motivated’ by an interview the Liverpool midfielder gave to TNT Sports in England, in which he recalled the day he became a Flamengo fan.
In that interview he spoke of his fond memory of Dejan Petković ‘s historic goal in the Campeonato Carioca in 2001 and how he has Flamengo shirts in his personal archive at home.
These comments did not go unnoticed by Flamengo fans and now they want to see the Liverpool man move to Brazil and join them.
Whether that actually happens remains to be seen but with his contract at Anfield set to expire in 2024, it’s a possibility and they’re doing their best, at least on social media, to push the idea.
