Over the past year, there has been a recurring story in France that Newcastle United are interested in Jean-Clair Todibo.
The OGC Nice centre-back has finally found some stability and form in France with the Ligue 1 side after a tumultuous start to his career, and that caught the eye of the Magpies.
Nice-Matin in France bring back the interest from Newcastle on Friday, as they look at what could happen to the defender in the coming weeks.
They believe the player will start his fourth season in the club’s shirt, even if he was ‘approached’ by a number of Premier League clubs, including Eddie Howe’s side, Aston Villa and West Ham.
Todibo is ‘absolutely not against the idea’ of remaining in the south of France, as he aims to be part of his country’s squad for the 2024 Euros next summer.
That will then be the time for him to take flight to a bigger club, and with Nice already setting the bar at €40-50m for a transfer, there might be a need for even more in a year’s time.
While Saudi sides have come knocking this summer as well, Todibo himself has ‘not opened the door’ to that option.
Therefore, if Newcastle do want him this summer, they will need to cough up a fair bit of money, which they might be reluctant to after already spending a fair chunk this summer.
