Ajax should call Leeds United and Southampton to try and sell Calvin Bassey to them this month after his disappointing spell at the club so far.
That’s according to analyst René van der Gijp, who believes the Dutch side should be desperate to sell the defender on as soon as possible.
Bassey joined Ajax in a €23m deal from Rangers in the summer after two years with the Ibrox side amid interest from Leeds and Southampton, who he impressed for in their run to the Europa League final last season.
He arrived as a replacement for Lisandro Martinez, who left to join Erik ten Hag at Manchester United, but has struggled to fill the Argentine’s shoes at the Dutch giants this season.
Bassey has continually been criticised for his performances across the campaign so far, with a series of disappointing displays seeing him pinpointed as a problem in a disappointing season from Ajax so far.
Van der Gijp is one of those who is unimpressed and believes that Ajax should be calling Leeds and Southampton, who were also reportedly interested in the summer, to try and sell Bassey on.
“If I were Ajax, I would have called those other interested clubs, Southampton and Leeds United, and said: ‘For €12.5m, you can have him. For €10m too,” Sport Niuews report him saying.
“What went wrong there (at Ajax). How dissatisfied they will be there. 2 years back everyone thought they were going to be the Bayern Munich of the Netherlands.
“Totally untouchable, so you see what a bit of mismanagement can do in a year. Mess up your whole club. What a lot of money for those guys man, not normal.”
