On Thursday, it was reported in France that Chelsea were close to making their move to try and sign Elye Wahi from Montpellier.
The young forward has become a target for the Blues of late, with claims they could then loan him to Strasbourg for a season so he can continue his impressive development under Patrick Vieira in Ligue 1.
However, Chelsea aren’t the only club interest, as Atlético Madrid are also keen to bring the Frenchman to La Liga, making their first approach in the process, according to L’Equipe.
The news comes late on Friday, as the newspaper state the Spanish club have ‘officially made contact’ with Montpellier for the 20-year-old.
This comes at a time when Chelsea are trying to ‘prepare their offer’ to convince the Ligue 1 club, and the belief was that the Blues would ‘quickly accelerate’ their attempts as the forward wants his future resolved in the near future.
Atlético’s move therefore comes at an inopportune time for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, especially since the Spaniards are looking to ‘start negotiations’.
They are said to have discussed the possibility of including a player in the transfer, although that is something that hasn’t convinced Montpellier to date.
