Borussia Dortmund had ‘started a return campaign’ to bring Jadon Sancho back to the club from Manchester United, but saw it fail for two key reasons.
That’s according to SportBILD, who cover the player today and explain how he may have ended up back at his former club had things gone differently.
Sancho is currently out of the picture at Manchester United after a very public falling out with manager Erik ten Hag.
It’s the latest incident in a disappointing spell at Old Trafford for Sancho, who had been one of the rising stars in Europe during his time at Dortmund in the Bundesliga.
Indeed, he remains a firm fan favourite at the club and SportBILD state that if you were to ask the fanbase who they should sign to help alleviate their current problems, it would be him.
That was a stance those in charge at the German club agreed with and they ‘started a return campaign’ for him, but two key issues meant it never happened.
The first of those was the player’s discipline, which was an issue during his time at Dortmund and always a topic of discussion internally. He was often late for training and would regularly fly away from the club for a day or two, via private jet, after games as well.
The biggest problem is a lack of sleep, though, caused by Sancho playing on his console or PC late into the night.
That lifestyle doesn’t fit with the working-class mentality in Dortmund at all and it would often cause unrest in the team too.
Then there is the transfer itself. Dortmund asked through intermediaries what a deal might look like, and it quickly became clear Manchester United didn’t want to sanction a loan, they were ‘insisting’ on a sale.
Dortmund were quoted €60m, a fee they consider ‘absolutely utopian’ given there are questions about whether they can afford small scale signings as it is.
They only wanted Sancho on loan, but it was made clear that wasn’t an option and so the transfer fell by the wayside, leaving Sancho at Manchester United and on course for the subsequent falling out with Ten Hag.
