Last week, Marca reported Atlético Madrid continue to have Celtic’s Matt O’Riley on their agenda after Brendan Rodgers’ side turned down their offer in the winter market.
The La Liga side took Arthur Vermeeren in the same market and he hasn’t managed to fully convince just yet. Therefore, they are looking for a new midfielder in the summer window.
That’s according to Mundo Deportivo, who state the Celtic star and Feyenoord’s Mats Wieffer have been identified as two targets.
Atlético offered around €20m for O’Riley and Wieffer in January, and those offers were rejected by Celtic and the Dutch club.
The situation has changed as the report states Brendan Rodgers’ side and Feyenoord are ‘more open to negotiating’ in the next window.
It’s claimed the two players are still on Los Rojiblancos list as they ‘really like’ them. The duo are also aware that Diego Simeone’s side are ready to battle for them.
Although Atlético are interested in the Celtic midfielder and the Dutchman, only one of them is likely to arrive in Madrid.
O’Riley finished the season with 19 goals and 18 assists from 49 games for Celtic and that wasn’t enough for him to receive a call up from Denmark for the Euros. A move to a club like Atlético may improve his chances of regularly representing his country.
