Replacing Josu Urrutia as Athletic Club Bilbao’s president, Aitor Elizegi didn’t take long in admitting he would like certain former players to return, including Fernando Llorente.

The Tottenham striker, who is out of contract at the end of the season, has already made it clear he would be open to moving back to the Basque club, admitting ‘it would be nice to retire there’.

However, injuries to Harry Kane, amongst others, meant the Spaniard would see out the rest of his contract with Spurs instead of leaving in January.

During a chat with Tele Bilbao in Spain, relayed by AS, Elizegi was once again asked about the possibility of the likes of Javi Martinez, Ander Herrera or Llorente returning.

He said: “Any of those three could play in the team. Athletic has the ability to go through with these type of transfers. I hope that Javi, Herrera or Llorente would like to make this effort, which would be a generous one.”

On the less than amicable separation between Athletic Bilbao and the now Tottenham striker back in 2012 when he forced a move to Juventus, the club president explained that was all in the past for him.

He said: “Both parties made some mistakes and those breaks need to be mended. Who are we to judge? If it’s true that you want to be a player of this level at Athletic, it’s very easy to send some clear messages.”

Llorente has done that, now it’s up to Ander Herrera and Javi Martinez to join in, although with claims that Paris Saint-Germain are in the mix for the Manchester United midfielder, Athletic might find that one a bit more tricky.
