Once the transfer window closes, there’s always a few weeks during which stories of failed transfers leak, and Marseille’s apparent move for Tottenham’s Victor Wanyama, at least according to RMC Sport.

The French outlet stated the Ligue 1 club were looking at the Kenya international after selling Luiz Gustavo to Fenerbahçe, but couldn’t afford him outright, so a loan was being looked at.

France Football have a similar story on Monday, although the reason why Marseille and Wanyama are mentioned together is very different.

The magazine are reporting the Tottenham player was ‘offered’ to the French side on a loan with a view to buy at €8m, having been given the green light by Spurs to get a move away this summer.

The deal would also have expected them to take on his €3m (after tax) salary, which is quite considerable for a club already sweating due to FFP restrictions.

However, completely focused on trying to sign Valentin Rongier from Nantes, Marseille passed up on the opportunity, eventually signing their desired man 24h or so after the transfer deadline thanks to the ‘Joker transfer rule’ in France.
