After a short reprieve, the Christian Eriksen to Real Madrid rumours have come back with force this week.
The midfielder made it clear he wanted to leave Tottenham in the summer, and Real Madrid were regularly linked as his potential destination.
A move never happened, but the interest from Madrid has not died down. Indeed, we covered a report that stated they were looking at him again come January.
Now, El Desmarque have suggested that a swap deal involving Luka Modric could be on the cards between Madrid and Tottenham.
It’s claimed Madrid boss Florentino Pérez has been offered Eriksen in a trade deal for Modric, an operation that Madrid will ‘consider’ this week.
Madrid rate Modric, after all, he won the Ballon D’Or last year, but they know that at 34-years-old this is the last chance they’ve got to get rid of him and get something in return.
Desmarque say Spurs fans would look favourably on Modric returning, although they would consider him ‘hardly any more than a stop-gap’ given his age.
And, while initially sounding absurd, it is a deal that could make sense. Both players are out of contract this summer and if they’re going to make these moves anyway, then doing it six months earlier would be smart.
Eriksen would improve Madrid and Modric would make a welcome addition at Tottenham as well, although it’s debatable whether he would want the move.
There’s sure to be big-money offers for him come the summer and at 34-years-old, now is the time for him to take it easy, not put himself back into the hustle and bustle of the Premier League.
Stranger things have happened, though, and if this is the way in which the long-running Eriksen saga can be brought to an end, then it may be a possibility.
It’s a long shot, though.
