Josko Gvardiol has been repeatedly linked with a move to Leeds United in recent weeks, with it being reported in Croatia the Premier League side have offered more than €20m.
Throughout it’s been made clear Gvardiol was against the idea of a move to Elland Road this summer, feeling he needs another campaign with Dinamo Zagreb before he’s ready for such a transfer.
Leeds, and Marcelo Bielsa specifically, were presented as believing otherwise and having confidence the defender is ready for the challenges of English football. Dinamo have also been keen on the deal, especially after they were knocked out of Champions League qualifying.
Kicker now report RB Leipzig are making a move to push Leeds United aside, and there’s clearly confidence the Bundesliga club will be able to do so. They want Gvardiol to arrive next summer, so he can replace Dayot Upamecano, who is expected to go when his release clause becomes active.
Such a scenario sounds like it will please the player, with him getting the extra season he wants. However, it’s not great for cash-strapped Dinamo, unless Leipzig are prepared to pay the transfer fee now.
In that situation, it’s difficult for Leeds to beat them.
