Roma director of football Tiago Pinto has made an ‘approach’ to Leeds United’s Wilfried Gnonto, but the Italian side would only do a deal under certain conditions.
That’s according to Corriere dello Sport, who say talks have been held over the forward but there is nothing concrete at this stage.
A report last night claimed that Gnonto’s representatives had been in touch with Pinto in Rome regarding a potential move to the club this summer.
Gnonto is keen to leave Leeds as soon as possible and has handed in a transfer request in an attempt to push through a move away.
Those in charge at Elland Road are refusing to let him leave, though, frustrated by a summer which has seen their squad decimated by departures following relegation to the Championship.
Their hope is that they can keep hold of Gnonto, who doesn’t have a release clause like other players, bring him back into the squad and let him star for them this season.
That’s not stopped Gnonto continuing to push for the move, though, and the claims last night where that he had now been in touch with Roma to see if a deal could be done with them.
Corriere now follow that up and say there has been ‘an approach’ for the Leeds man in the last few hours, with Tiago Pinto scouring the market for forward options.
He’s promised manager Jose Mourinho two new reinforcements up front by the end of the window and Gnonto could be one to explore.
His focus is on centre forwards, though, and Gnonto doesn’t fall into that category. He would instead be ‘an investment’ who could be considered a reinforcement ‘under certain conditions’.
Any move seems to depend on Mourinho and what he thinks. The inclination is that if he approves of it, Pinto will try and make a move happen. Leeds will be hoping he doesn’t, as they face the prospect of batting off yet another club in the final weeks of the window.
