As far as disappointing transfers go last year, Donny van de Beek’s from Ajax to Manchester United has to be close to the top of the pile.
The excitement surrounding the Dutchman’s arrival was quite palpable, but what followed was anything but, as the midfielder struggled to find a place in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans, leading many to question the motives behind the move in the first place.
To cap an already miserable season off, van de Beek was then forced to pull out of the Netherlands squad just before the Euros with an injury, meaning he will now be working hard to be fully fit for the start of Manchester United’s preseason.
The latest news coming out of his home country, around the time of his injury, suggested the Red Devils aren’t looking to part ways with him, but any disappointing season does come with unwanted transfer rumours.
The latest concerning van de Beek comes from Corriere dello Sport, who describe the former Ajax starlet as a ‘advantageous opportunity on loan’ for Milan, as long as Manchester United are willing to ‘get rid of him’.
After all, the relationship between the two clubs is rather good following the successful temporary deal for Diogo Dalot struck last summer, so perhaps this could be the perfect move for the Dutchman to rekindle his career in a team that will actually start him in games.
