Earlier in the week we covered reports Valencia are showing an interest in Leeds United target Linus Wahlqvist. The Norrkoping defender has impressed for his club in the past 12 months, and it transpires Valencia tried to sign the player in the last window.

Last week Valencia sent scouts to monitor Wahlqvist playing for Sweden U21s against Serbia. Following this scouting trip Fotboll Direckt have claimed Valencia have stepped up their pursuit for the 20-year-old, after making a last ditch attempt to sign the right back before the January deadline.

Wahlqvist himself confirmed an offer did come in for him in January from a major club, but he decided to remain with Norrkoping: “I know that there was a concrete bid. We have a plan, and I declined big clubs. There is no stress, and I really enjoy working at Norrkoping.”

There were reports during the last window that Leeds United are still interested in the player after he said he would play in the Championship. Leeds United’s recent run sees them as serious promotion contenders, and as such the club is becoming more attractive to potential signings.

Leeds United will face stiff competition to sign Wahlqvist from the likes of Valencia and Stuttgart in the summer. Norrkoping need to sell players to balance the books, and it’s going to be interesting to see if they offload their prized asset in the next window.
