Coventry City are holding out on accepting a bid for striker Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting Club de Portugal as they hope West Ham and Wolves will get involved.
That’s according to Record, who say the Portuguese side have made an ‘acceptable’ bid for the forward, who is their number one target this summer.
The newspaper explains that Gyökeres is a ‘priority’ for Sporting in this window, but the Portuguese side will have to enter a ‘game of patience’ as Coventry continue to delay.
Hugo Viana, Sporting’s director of football, recently travelled to England where he presented a proposal to Coventry that was ‘pleasing’ and showed how far they are willing to go to get Gyökeres.
A proposal of €16m plus €3m in goals and €2m in variables is on the table and Coventry’s board are considering accepting it.
They first, though, want another week to consider things as they are waiting to see if they receive any other ‘official offers’ for Gyökeres namely from clubs like West Ham or Wolves, who are also ‘interested’ in the 25-year-old.
The Championship side’s hope is that they will get involved and potentially drive up the price, perhaps even forcing Sporting to pay more as he is their number one target.
That’s not happened as yet, though, with West Ham presumably focused on moving on Gianluca Scamacca first and Wolves dealing with Financial Fair Play issues, although they may have been aided by the sale of Ruben Neves to Saudi Arabia.
Coventry will be aware of that of course and are now delaying accepting a more than a reasonable bid from Sporting in the hope the Premier League duo come forwards.
