Spanish side Getafe are breathing a sigh of relief after Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta insisted, they will not be signing a striker this month.

That’s according to Estadio Deportivo, who say the club are now confident they will not be losing striker Borja Mayoral to the Gunners this month.

They explain that Mayoral’s great campaign is not going unnoticed inside and outside of Spain, with several European teams having been linked in recent weeks.

Arsenal are among them, with the lack of a focal point in Arteta’s team having become a continued talking point and it widely felt they would target a striker to fill the gap.

Several reports had indicated a move for Mayoral could be in the offing but that was rejected in Spain and Arteta’s latest comments appear to back that up.

“No, we are not going to sign, but it is because I am delighted with the players we have here,” he is quoted as saying at his press conference today.

That came as ‘great news’ for the Azulones, who have become heavily reliant on the centre forward, whose 12 goals in the league this season is the joint second best in the division and has helped them to mid-table safety after they narrowly avoided relegation last season.

Losing him to Arsenal would have been a major blow but they’re now breathing easy, at least until the summer, when more big teams could come calling if he continues his firm form.
