Chelsea star N’Golo Kanté has been in contact with Barcelona for weeks, as per Sport.
The 31-year-old has been out of action with a hamstring injury since August. His deal expires in 2023 and the Blues want to offer him an extension.
However, the midfielder, doesn’t want to accept Chelsea’s renewal offer and wants to leave them for the La Liga side.
It’s claimed Barca ‘advances in signing’ the player for free next summer and the option to take him pleases Xavi Hernández. The ‘bases of the agreement are practically closed’, while the Blaugrana wait to find out about his recovery.
The case has progressed naturally and could be closed in January, provided Kanté can prove his fitness. His hamstring injury is the biggest stumbling block for the Catalan club. They want to be sure there are no concerns over the France international’s fitness.
Kanté is viewed as a market opportunity at Barcelona, as long he can prove his fitness. He earns ‘a lot’ at Chelsea, which the Spanish giants will not be able to match. Sport say his fixed salary would be capped, and he will receive bonuses depending on performances.
Barca are looking at other options for midfield, but the Kanté case is ‘most advanced’ due to a decision taken by the club’s technical leaders. Xavi’s side can reach an agreement with the Chelsea player in January if he passes the physical test.
