For the past few days, Peñarol’s Facundo Pellistri has been linked to Manchester United.
There were claims suggesting the Red Devils are set to activate the 18-year-old’s release clause, but agent fees were causing issues. Journalist Sebas Giovanelli explained yesterday this issue has been sorted out and the winger was waiting for a call to undergo his medical.
Edinson Cavani is set to to join United on a free transfer and according to El Observador, Pellistri will join the former PSG star at Old Trafford.
Lyon were keen on signing the teenager and were ready to offer €4.5m fee plus 40 percent of a future fee [not less than €4m].
Pellistri will not be moving to France because he will go to Manchester after United’s offer was accepted by Peñarol. The English club will pay his $10m (€8.5m) (previously reported as $15m) release clause.
The player’s agent Gerardo Rabajda has informed Peñarol’s board his client’s release clause will be paid and Pellistri ‘will go to Manchester United’. As per the report, the official confirmation is set to arrive in the next few hours so that he can travel on Sunday.
El Observador explains the South American club’s board decided not to accept Lyon’s proposal. Rabajda and Pellistri’s father called the board to change their stance, but they were unsuccessful in their efforts and this caused ‘annoyance’ in the attacker’s camp.
United then came between Friday and Saturday and their proposal convinced both the player and the club.
Pellistri will see his wages double and he will also play in a league which is considered far superior to Ligue 1. There was a ‘happy ending’ for all parties involved.
Pellistri is set to travel to England in the ‘next few hours’ to undergo his medical with and sign a contract with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side. Earlier reports said he’d undergo the checks in Uruguay.
‘Pellistri leaves Peñarol, joins Manchester United and will be Cavani’s partner’ is the title of El Observador’s report.
