Mateo Joseph moved to Leeds United in January of this year, joining the club’s U23 squad.
The 19-year-old made his Premier League debut in the 4-3 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend, coming on at the end of the thrilling match. This came just days after his full match in the EFL Cup defeat to Wolves.
Joseph, a striker who can also play on the left wing, is able to represent Spain or England at international level and a choice may have to be made soon.
AS report that at Leeds United they believe England are ‘very close to calling him up’ ahead of the U20 World Cup in Indonesia, which takes place in May. The Whites ‘understand’ a phone call is on the way, and Joseph will be given the opportunity to represent England.
For Spain it creates a situation which reminds them of Alejandro Garnacho. Manchester United’s latest hero was able to represent either Spain or Argentina at international level.
The South American country got there first and Spain are increasingly kicking themselves over missing out, so they’re watching similar situations with greater urgency.
