Ludwig Augustinsson was one of the new faces to arrive at Villa Park as Aston Villa took him on a season-long loan deal from Sevilla in the summer.
The Sweden international was signed to provide cover and competition to Lucas Digne in the left-back position. The former is yet to make an appearance as Steven Gerrard has preferred the Frenchman this season.
Digne received a France call-up to replace Theo Hernandez, after the AC Milan star picked up an injury. Unfortunately for Les Bleus, it was then discovered the Aston Villa player had injured his right ankle.
On Wednesday, L’Equipe reported there is a concern over a ‘possible stress fracture’ for the ex-Everton man. His latest setback could see Gerrard rely upon Augustinsson when Villa face Leeds United on October 2nd.
The Swede is currently with the national team, and isn’t pleased with Digne’s setback, even though it can help him get minutes at Aston Villa.
“I didn’t know about that. I only saw it now after training. First of all, it’s always sad when a teammate and a friend gets injured,” Helsingborgs Dagblad, relayed by Fotbolltransfers.
“These are important players for us. It is clear that it opens up opportunities for others – and for me. But we will need all players this season if we are to get good results, there will be many games. Whether he (Digne) is injured or not, I think the chances will present themselves.”
