Back on Monday, the Argentine media broke the news about Newcastle United’s interest in Alan Varela from Boca Juniors.
That was a report from Directv journalist Fafi Perez, who claimed that the Magpies are willing to spend US$18m on the midfielder.
It turns out Newcastle’s interest is now backed up in a new report from TNT Sports journalist Marcos Bonocore, even though it seems the Premier League side haven’t taken any big steps for now.
This story states that ‘nothing formal’ has been presented to either Boca Juniors or to the player’s representatives yet.
There’s also some new information regarding the player’s price, as it’s claimed that the player has a US$15m release clause, and that’s the only way Boca Juniors will let him go.
So it’s not yet clear why Newcastle would like to pay more than that, and it could be that the first information was not very accurate, or perhaps the Magpies are thinking of trying to entice Boca with a bit more money overall and spread the payments to simply avoid paying US$15m up front
Either way, that’s a rumour which is gaining strength in the Argentine media, and one that needs an eye kept on.
