Dries Mertens’ contract expires with Napoli at the end of June and a renewal isn’t looking likely right now.

That means transfer rumours are going to grow ahead of the summer, with it being thought the player would prefer to wait for his free agent status before choosing a new club.

Le10 Sport report that Chelsea have ‘taken a very clear position’ on signing the player, and that negotiations are underway. Inter Milan are in the same situation, and other clubs are also considering an approach.

It’s not too hard to doubt this story.

Mertens will be 33 years of age in June and he’s likely looking for a minimum of a two year deal, plus the probability of big wages and a signing bonus.

Given Chelsea have been repeatedly difficult when offering contracts to their own over-30s, who already successful in the Premier League, it would be out of character for them to throw a big contract at someone like Mertens.
