Chelsea are continuing to monitor Barcelona youngster Pau Cubarsí after they ‘pushed the hardest’ to secure his signature this summer.

That’s according to Sport, who say that despite the youngster renewing his contract until 2026, the Blues remain keen on him.

The newspaper explains that Cubarsí renewed his contract with Barcelona this summer, doing so at the end of June when he ended his time as youth player.

Those negotiations were not easy as the players’ progression had caught and continues to catch the attention of clubs in Europe, specifically Chelsea.

They ‘pushed the hardest’ to get him out of the Camp Nou and continue to monitor the defender ‘very closely’ to this date.

They very much consider him a target and have in fact ‘intensified monitoring’ him, which is being seen as a logical choice thanks to the good work he’s been putting in this season.

Cubarsí has been impressing with the chances he’s been given and ‘amazes’ with his maturity and ability to understand the game according to Sport.

Barcelona’s hope had been that a three-year deal would scare away suitors such as Chelsea but that hasn’t happened as his release clause, which is around €10-15m, ‘does not represent any impediment’.

Barcelona director of football Deco is very aware of the situation and the interest in the player, who he considers as the youngster with the ‘greatest projection’ in the club. Indeed, there is a feeling his deal will not be sufficient before long and need looking at again.

Cubarsí, for his part, rejected better financial offers to continue playing for Barcelona and is already a regular in Xavi’s training sessions. The Barcelona coach is delighted with him and could even introduce him into the first team before too long.

That means the youngster is happy and any interested parties, including Chelsea, might have work on their hands to convince him to leave.
