Chelsea currently have a ‘preferential lane’ in Napoli striker Victor Osimhen’s thinking as he gears up for a move in the summer transfer window.
That’s according to Gazzetta dello Sport, who say Chelsea would be his first choice thanks to Didier Drogba’s history at the club.
The newspaper explains that with Kylian Mbappe looking set to leave Paris Saint Germain, the focus is now on Osimhen, who could be the man chosen to replace him.
The interest from PSG is there and they would have the funds to satisfy Napoli, who will demand his €130m release clause be met in full, and the player’s wage demands, which are currently €10m a year.
The problem is that Osimhen has long dreamed of playing in the Premier League and it remains his ‘great goal’ as he wants to follow in the footsteps of his idol Didier Drogba.
His history and success at Chelsea means they have a ‘preferential lane’ in the striker’s thinking, but the major problems is that they cannot offer Champions League football next season, or perhaps even the season after that.
That’s an issue for a player like Osimhen, who absolutely wants to be playing at the highest level, which includes the Champions League.
Thus, Chelsea would have some convincing to do to get him, never mind the financial efforts they’d have to make to be able to afford the operation given the state of their finances at the moment.
The opportunity is there, though, and perhaps they can employ Drogba to help further boost their cause in the coming months.
