With Tammy Abraham shining and Michy Batshuayi also making strides under Frank Lampard, Olivier Giroud has found himself relegated to a bit-part player at Chelsea this season
The Frenchman has managed six appearances in all competitions and is yet to manage a full 90 minutes in any of those games.
It’s a situation he’s admitted he’s not happy about, with a transfer in January, potentially back to France, mooted.
Part of his frustration is that he needs to be playing at Chelsea to ensure he’s part of France’s squad for Euro 2020 next summer.
Earlier this week L’Equipe reported that Giroud was aware the ‘precarious situation’ couldn’t continue, with Didier Deschamps unlikely to keep selecting him if he wasn’t playing.
They reported that he was likely to be part of France’s squad for this international break and back that up saying he is likely to be there despite his ‘low playing time’.
However, they now say that if that situation continues beyond the winter transfer window, that could change. In fact, this latest call-up could be his last for Les Blues if that is the case.
That’s a little more dramatic than before and a clear hint that Giroud’s situation at Chelsea is undoubtedly one that France are keeping an eye on.
With it unlikely to improve, the striker seems destined to push for a move in January. Whether Chelsea permit it, is another thing entirely.
