For as long as we can remember, since the start of the season, the only two clubs very interested in Valencia’ André Gomes were Juventus and Manchester United.

Barcelona were mentioned here and there, but it was mainly the Serie A champions and José Mourinho’s new club (the Jorge Mendes connection) who were the front runners.

Well, it appears Chelsea have now overtaken both of them, and have officially placed a bid for the Portuguese midfielder, who is currently with his country preparing this summer’s Euros final against France.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the player remains a Barcelona target, but they will have to pay a lot of money for him, as Valencia don’t want to see him leave.

The Spanish newspaper state the Liga BBVA club have rejected two offers, one from Juventus reported to be around €45m (£38.5m), and another from Chelsea, which was superior by €8m at €53m (£45.2m).

The message since the end of the season was that €60m (£51.2m) should do the trick, but Valencia seemed to have used the player’s participation in the Euros to up that to €85m (£72.6m).

Such a fee is sure to make clubs think twice about bidding in the future, but Mundo Deportivo claim Chelsea are preparing another bid.

Will it be €85m, though?
