Over the past few months, as far back as November, there has been talk that Celtic were interested in signing Sydney van Hooijdonk from Bologna to help Brendan Rodgers’ squad.
The son of former Celtic player Pierre has struggled of late in Italy, finding himself firmly behind an in-form Joshua Zirkzee, and Corriere dello Sport firmly believe he is on his way out.
He had to be kept around for the game against Cagliari, since the Dutch star was suspended, but now that the game is done, he can leave.
The problem here is that someone else ‘will have to arrive first’ because Thiago Motta doesn’t want to find himself short of firepower up front should an injury occur.
What the manager does want is ‘another type of player’ to the Dutchman, who relies on crosses from his teammates to find goals.
Therefore, he would only stay at Bologna if no incomings took place, which would be a surprise since that’s what Bologna are actively working on.
Celtic were warned about all this before the Cagliari game, and they will have to wait a bit longer if they are indeed keen on having the striker in their squad.
He is ‘ready to say goodbye’ to his club for good, and has his ‘suitcase’ ready, but everyone just needs to be patient for a deal to take place.
