Birmingham City icon Christophe Dugarry has said he was unimpressed by Aston Villa this week, insisting their performance was a demonstration of why they are 7th in the Premier League.
RMC Sport have comments from Dugarry today as the French media continue to analyse Paris Saint-Germain’s 3-1 win in the Champions League quarter finals.
It proved to be a relatively comfortable evening for the French side who, despite falling behind, could and probably should have won by an even bigger margin.
Unai Emery elected to go with a defensive line up for the trip to Paris, with Aston Villa sitting deep in hope of countering PSG’s undeniable attacking talent.
That strategy did not work, though, as superb individual goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Désiré Doué and Nuno Mendes sealed a 3-1 victory.
The French media were left unimpressed by what they had seen from Aston Villa, with reports after the game openly admitting they had expected more from the Premier League side.
It seems Dugarry, who knows all about them after his impressive spell at rivals Birmingham City during his playing career, was one of those who was left unimpressed by what he witnessed.
“I found this team of Aston Villa quite catastrophic. This is also technical quality of the PSG. But I understand better why Aston Villa is 7th in the Premier League,” he said.
“This team has been extremely disappointing. Asensio did not play in Paris, Rashford did not play at Manchester United. Teams like Aston Villa and Borussia Dortmund have no place at this level. There is so much gap between Paris and Aston Villa.
“Congratulations to the PSG, which has been well above in all areas. Aston Villa has no strong players to pull out the balls, and did not fight on the second balls. This team hasn’t shown much.”
