Burnley striker Wout Weghorst has found himself being criticised at Euro 2024, after an over aggressive performance in a recent reserve game.
FC Update cover the situation today and comments from journalist Valentijn Driessen, who says Weghorst has left some unimpressed with his recent display.
The Burnley striker was the hero for the Netherlands in their opening game win over Poland but has remained a substitute for Ronald Koeman since, managing 11 minutes against France and 18 in the defeat to Austria.
That latter result had left the Dutch a little frustrated and it seems that may have spilled over into a fixture planned for the reserves this week.
Those not in the first-team picture were picked for a reserve game against a German fourth division team, which they won 6-1.
The Burnley striker bagged two goals in that game but made an ‘aggressive’ impression, something that left the Germans less than impressed.
“Weghorst had knocked another one over,” Driessen explained his analysis for De Telegraaf.
“They didn’t really like that, they thought it was very aggressive. They were not allowed to play so aggressively, but Weghorst did.”
Whether that was Weghorst just being a little too exuberant or using the game to vent some frustrations remains to be seen.
Its already been established that the Burnley man wasn’t happy at being a reserve choice for Koeman, particularly when Memphis Depay isn’t scoring either, and perhaps that frustration boiled over into the game this week.
