Jadran means Adriatic in Croatian. Galeb means seagull.
Therefore, NK Jadran Galeb are the Adriatic Seagulls. However, they’re nowhere near the Adriatic Sea, and instead the club was formed when teams from two Croatian villages, Kuzminec and Koledinec, merged in 2011.
What has any of this got to do with Brighton & Hove Albion? Well, it’s a crest issue. It would appear that whoever designed the Jadran Galeb badge took quite some inspiration from Brighton.
When we say inspiration, we mean they copied it exactly, and just changed the wording.
Friday’s edition of Glas Slavonije reports Brighton have found out about this and have sent a letter to Jadran Galeb demanding they stop essentially using the Premier League club’s badge.
There’s no legal threat at this stage, just a demand for them to change.
Glas Slavonije report the way Brighton found about Jadran Galeb and their badge is ‘quite incredible’.
A member of the Croatian club was in Brighton, went to the Seagulls’ offices, told them about the similarity between the two clubs, and presumably expecting football fraternity, asked for ‘some kind of symbolic donation, in the form of equipment’.
And that’s what alerted Brighton & Hove Albion.
Hopefully, there’s more to this and Brighton have at least offered to redesign a crest for Jadran Galeb.
