Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken has insisted he is the right man to be Netherlands number one in this international break, with a positive start for the Bees a sign of that fact.
He goalkeeper has been speaking to NOS after being called up to Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands squad for this international break.
The goalkeeper appears to be Koeman’s number one choice for his side at this moment in time, ahead of Brighton and Hove Albion’s Bart Verbruggen, for example.
The opportunity to stake their claim has been presented to them by an injury to presiding number one Justin Bijlow, who is currently on the sidelines with a broken wrist.
Flekken is one of several options available to Koeman but there have been calls for highly rated Verbruggen, who was starring for Anderlecht last season, to be instated as the long-term option.
Unlike Flekken at Brentford, though, he is not yet number one at Brighton, having started two games in the Premier League and conceded four goals so far.
Flekken, meanwhile, has four appearances to his name with five goals and one clean sheet for Brentford, numbers he thinks makes him the number one choice.
“Because I think I have the best credentials at the moment,” he responded when asked why he should be ahead of the others.
“I’m playing all the matches so far, I’m at a good level and I’m feeling good. Of course, you choose yourself at the end of the day, but there is one thing bigger than yourself and that is the Dutch national team.
“Ultimately it is only about one thing and that is qualifying for the final tournament next year.”
