On Wednesday, the English press reported Aston Villa have reached an agreement with Chelsea for Ian Maatsen’s transfer.
Later that day, Sky Deutschland journalist Patrick Berger said Borussia Dortmund have 48 hours to outbid Aston Villa after the €35m buying option expired on Monday.
He also said the Chelsea left-back, who spent the second half of the 2023/24 season on loan at BVB, wants to continue at the Signal Iduna Park.
Berger took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to explain that the Bundesliga side fought hard to get this deal over the line. The Champions League finalists won’t be successful.
He now claims Dortmund are ‘definitely out’ of the race to sign the 22-year-old because they ‘will not match’ Aston Villa’s offer.
At this moment in time, Unai Emery’s side haven’t agreed a deal with the Chelsea player, and the journalist says this is expected to be sorted out ‘soon’. Maatsen is set to sign a deal until 2030.
Berger adds the Dutch fullback can earn more at Aston Villa than he would have if he had returned to Dortmund this summer.
