Romelu Lukaku has nobody but himself to blame for his situation at Chelsea and the summer of transfer failures.
That’s according to Johan Boskamp, who says the striker has ruined his credibility over the years by declaring his love for various clubs.
Lukaku returned to Chelsea from a loan spell at Inter but was made aware from day one that he was not a part of Mauricio Pochettino’s plans and should leave.
It first appeared he would be joining Inter Milan on a permanent basis, but that deal was quickly ripped up when the Italian side became outraged at the Belgian speaking to Juventus about a possible move.
It then appeared that Juve were at the forefront and likely to get him, potentially in a swap deal with Dusan Vlahovic, but that proved to difficult to work out between Chelsea and Juventus.
That left Lukaku desperately looking around for a new club, refusing offers from Saudi Arabia, where Chelsea would have gladly sent him, because he wanted to remain in Europe.
He now appears to be on his way to Roma after they made a late push for him, with talks between them and Chelsea taking place last night and this morning to get an agreement in place.
That’s the latest development in what has been a miserable summer of twists and turns for the striker, but Boskamp won’t be showing him any sympathy.
“Sorry, but he only has himself to blame for that,” he told Het Belang van Limburg, relayed by Voetbalkrant.
“First Anderlecht was his big footballing love, then it was Chelsea, then Everton and then Inter again. You can’t declare your unconditional love to a different club every season. That doesn’t come across as credible.
“Certainly not if you then go on to hook up with the big enemy, as he did with Juventus at Inter. That’s how you smash your own windows.”
