Hyped as one of the best games in the Champions League group stage calendar, Napoli vs Manchester City on Wednesday night didn’t disappoint.

Pep Guardiola’s side walked away with a hard fought 4-2 win, with two great counter attacks proving to be the difference when the game was tied at 2-2 following Jorginho’s penalty.

A record was also broken during the game, as Sergio Agüero’s goal to make it 3-2 saw him surpass Eric Brook’s record of 177 goals for Manchester City, yet, amid all this, John Stones was seen as Manchester City’s ‘Il Migliore’ (‘The Best’) on the pitch, with Gazzetta dello Sport giving him a 7/10.

The Italian newspaper explain: “Made up for the initial discomfort when he was skipped past by Dries Mertens and Lorenzo Insigne, scored a goal and hit the crossbar. He also grew defensively as the game went on.”

The man of the match award, however, went to Lorenzo Insigne with a 7.5/10, while Raheem Sterling was also lauded for his technical skills and his ability to make the difference in crucial moments.

Down the other end of the scale, Danilo was seen, by far, as Manchester City’s ‘Il Peggiore’ (‘The Worst’), given a 5/10, which, considering every other Cityzen was given a 6+, says a lot.

They state: “He was lost, as his game revolved around Insigne the leprechaun who tormented him with his speed and his dribbling”.

Overall, the general consensus in Italy is that Manchester City were the deserved winners of the game, as Napoli’s defence were unable to contain Pep Guardiola’s men on the break.

Corriere dello Sport make it clear the Premier League side were ‘too much’ for Napoli, describing them as ‘Super City’, which few will disagree with these days.
