Tottenham’s final home game of the season brought a lot of tension, relief and a few notable faces to North London.

One of the more unexpected guests, however, was Benfica midfielder Heorhiy Sudakov – who attended Spurs’ 1-0 win over Everton alongside his agent Vadim Shablii.

The result secured Tottenham’s Premier League survival after a disastrous domestic campaign. While several guests were around the stadium for such a decisive afternoon, the presence of a Benfica player with his agent naturally raised eyebrows.

Who Sudakov is

Heorhiy Sudakov is viewed as one of Ukraine’s biggest talents. The attacking midfielder ended this season with four goals and four assists in 36 matches for Benfica across all competitions.

Benfica signed him from Shakhtar Donetsk last summer for around €20m (£16.9m). The idea was for him to become the side’s main creative reference after years of starring in Ukraine.

His adaptation has not been perfect so far, especially given the tactical and physical demands of Portuguese football. Still, flashes of quality have been obvious throughout the season.

When he played, Sudakov was highly active both centrally and drifting into wider areas – especially towards the right flank – averaging 2.28 key passes and 6.96 crosses per game, numbers which underline how heavily Benfica relied on his creativity and delivery.

He was a target to Bournemouth and Arsenal in recent years.

Trip to Tottenham explained

According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, Heorhiy Sudakov used his holidays before Ukraine’s June friendlies to travel to London. After the final whistle, he posted a video showing the connection between Tottenham’s players and supporters following survival.

He later uploaded a photo from the stands alongside Shablii.

There would be, of course, a reasonable explanation for the trip. Everton defender Vitaliy Mykolenko is Sudakov’s international teammate and was involved in the match.

Why it raises questions

Heorhii Sudakov

Heorhiy Sudakov being there with his agent makes the trip more interesting than a simple football visit.

Tottenham struggled badly for creativity and squad depth this season. Injuries exposed the lack of technical alternatives in attacking midfield areas, especially whenever games became more compact.

Sudakov is not yet a finished product. However, he is exactly the type of technical midfielder Premier League clubs tend to monitor closely before a potential breakout year.

Of course, his Champions League pedigree and record of more than 29 goals and 16 assists in 100 matches in the Ukrainian league may tell a slightly different story.

For now, this may simply have been a football trip between Ukrainian internationals. But with an agent beside him in the stands, there is enough here to wonder whether a summer story could be starting to form.
