Benfica are seventh in Liga Portugal after four matches and that just won’t do. They finished second last season, which isn’t any disgrace but they were ten points behind Sporting and therefore it wasn’t great either.
Since manager Roger Schmidt arrived at the Lisbon club there was often an uneasy feeling around him. He ostracised some players and didn’t produce the results which such actions then demand.
Benfica have now parted ways with him and subsequently find themselves in a manager hunt which has seen them look towards Fulham and Marco Silva.
Wednesday’s edition of Record reports contact has been made regarding taking the Fulham manager to Benfica. That contact was made with Marco Silva himself, according to the Portuguese newspaper.
However, the manager’s high salary and a termination clause, put at €15m, and the ‘timing’ has taken the Fulham man off the table.
Reading between the lines, it appears Marco Silva thanked Benfica for their interest, said he couldn’t really leave Fulham right now, and pointed out it would cost the Lisbon club a fortune anyway.
