Aston Villa’s hopes of signing Geoffrey Kondogbia may have been handed a boost as he falls further out of the picture at Atlético Madrid.
Marca cover the player today and explain that the midfielder is not going through an easy moment at the Wanda Metropolitano.
He’s gone two months without playing, as Diego Simeone sticks to a winning team and the good feeling returns to the Spanish side.
Rather than being a first team regular it is a case of ‘bench after bench, invisible’ for the midfielder, who has returned to international football so he can ‘feel valued’ and disconnect from what’s happening to him at Atlético and a ‘dynamic that is not good’.
Kondogbia had stepped away from international football two years ago as he wanted to focus on Atlético, with Simeone convincing him he needed to avoid it to be a part of his plans.
A separation in the summer seems likely and that should come as good news to Aston Villa, who are admirers of him.
We’ve covered several reports stating as much since last summer, when they made a last-ditch attempt to secure his signature.
Their interest has not dwindled since that point, despite Unai Emery’s arrival, and it’s since been made clear they are the ‘main favourites’ for his signature.
Whether a bid arrives at the end of this season remains to be seen, of course, but if it does it appears they will find a player and club ready to part ways and end Kondogbia’s misery.
