This week’s reports of Chelsea’s attempt to sign Viktor Gyokeres are still making some noise in Portugal.
Even though it’s already been claimed that Sporting turned down the Blues’ effort to land the striker, there are some people with the feeeling that the Stamford Bridge side will be back with more money.
That was said by Paulo Andrade on CMTV. Quoted by Bancada, he claims that Chelsea can well spend the €100m that matches Gyokeres’ release clause.
“I have to confess that I’ve been calmer before. Let’s see. If they really have offered €80m, a team like Chelsea won’t stop from offering €100m, in my opinion,” said Andrade.
Sporting only spent €20m to sign Gyokeres from Coventry City last summer, and it’s clear that they’re already in a condition to sell him for much more than that.
The problem is that the Lions are currently on top of the league table, and since his arrival, the striker had 20 goals and 10 assists in 24 appearances.
That means he’s of huge importance for the club, and they just can’t let him go in the middle of the season.
Chelsea could even put €100m on the table, but to trigger his release clause, they’d need to pay it all up front.
That doesn’t sound like something the Blues would do these days, so they would still need Sporting’s approval if they wanted to pay that fee over instalments.
