Bayern Munich defender Holger Badstuber has been linked with a reunion with Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.
The Premier League side, however, face competition from Schalke as we reported yesterday. It was claimed Schalke have an edge over Manchester City and now Bild are reporting the Bundesliga side have an agreement with the German defender.
Pending agreement between Schalke and Bayern Munich, Badtsuber should remain in Germany and Manchester City will have to look elsewhere.
Injuries to Matija Nastasic and Benedikt Höwedes have forced Schalke boss Markus Weinzierl to sign a central defender, as he intends to play three at the back.
Manchester City shouldn’t be too worried about losing Badstuber to Schalke, as the defender lacks match fitness and has managed just over 1200 minutes of league football in the last four seasons.
Hamburg, Stuttgart, Bayer Leverkusen and Cologne were also reportedly keen on the Bayern Munich defender, but he is now expected to sign for Schalke.
Guardiola spoke about Badstuber after Manchester City beat West Ham on Friday, but he didn’t confirm the club would be making a move to sign him. Manchester City have the repeated injury issues of Vincent Kompany, plus the struggles Guardiola has been having picking a reliable back two.
