Ajax returned for Steven Bergwijn in the last transfer window, after Tottenham Hotspur refused to let him leave in the winter market.
The Eredivisie winners were successful in finding an agreement with Spurs for the forward in the summer.
After leaving Tottenham, the 25-year-old enjoyed a good start to the season, scoring six goals from five league matches. Since then, he found the back of the net only once in the last seven league games and it was the sixth goal scored in Ajax’s 7-1 win over Excelsior Rotterdam.
The Netherlands international was not able to help Ajax suffer a 2-1 defeat against his former club, PSV Eindhoven, at the weekend. The latest result saw Ajax extend their poor run, which has seen them win four of their last 11 matches.
Due to the former Tottenham man’s dip in form for Ajax, VoetbalPrimeur have named his one of the ‘flops’ of this season.
They claim that Bergwijn, who is the Dutch club’s record-signing, is in a ‘formal crisis’. His place in the national team for the World Cup was certainty, but VoetbalPrimeur have told Louis van Gaal to think about it.
Meanwhile, Bergwijn is disappointed following his side’s latest defeat against PSV.
“Bad. This was just bad. Tension is normal, but you have to do the right things. Keep doing and playing football. We didn’t do that today. We didn’t create anything at all. This was not Ajax, it’s that simple,” he told ESPN, relayed by Algemeen Dagblad.
