Crowned World Cup champion on Sunday night after a dramatic penalty win over France, Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martínez was once again the hero for his country.
Lionel Messi’s performance aside, the goalkeeper was the second most important in that game, with his last second save from Randal Kolo Muani forcing a shootout, where he once again excelled, first saving from Kingsley Coman before putting Aurélien Tchouameni with his antics.
It worked, even if he did pick up a yellow card for them, and now the whole world knows about Aston Villa star, if they didn’t already.
Late last week, the Argentine was suggested as a long-term replacement for Manuel Neuer at Bayern Munich by Didi Hamann, and the German side are now taking a look at him.
That is, at least, what Media Foot in France are suggesting, running an exclusive, about the Bundesliga giants’ interest in the player.
They state the club ‘already have a name in mind’ regarding Neuer successor, and were ‘very attentive’ to all the performances of goalkeepers during the World Cup.
With Martínez lifting the trophy and picking up the tournament’s golden glove, he ‘ticks all the boxes’ they are looking for, since he has experience, is ‘efficient and has a great mentality’.
His name is currently being ‘debated’ within Munich, but for now, the Aston Villa player ‘has not planned on leaving the Premier League’.
A lot will likely depend on whether Bayern Munich can repatriate Alexander Nübel from AS Monaco, but if they can’t, then perhaps this is one worth keeping an eye on.
