When news broke that Aston Villa and Juventus were on the verge of a deal for Douglas Luiz, the Italian gist was that Weston McKennie and Samuel Iling-Junior would be going the other way, along with an amount approaching €20m.
Later it became clearer that the €20m is what Aston Villa were asking for, and Juventus themselves would rather pay something like €16m.
Thursday’s edition of Gazzetta dello Sport suggests Unai Emery’s side have got their way, with it stated it’s €20m Juventus are paying.
Despite claims elsewhere, the Italian newspaper report there’s no agreement yet on Douglas Luiz’s personal terms. There’s not thought to be any chance of that killing the deal, and Kia Joorabchian is pushing for €5m+ a year, a figure that will be after tax.
According to Gazzetta, the Brazilian currently earns around €3.5m, a figure that will also be after tax given that’s how football wages are reported in Italy.
Overall, even if they’re having to pay a few million extra and higher wages than they’d really want, the deal is seen as a great victory for Juventus.
Cristiano Giuntoli, the Turin club’s sporting director, has become something of a meme on Italian football social media, given how well it’s thought he’s done here.
Meanwhile, AS Roma fans are presenting I told you so insinuations about Monchi’s role, having not been impressed with his work when he was at their club.
