Aston Villa have emerged as a contender in the chase for Stade Rennais’ Lorenz Assignon, according to Foot Mercato.

The right-back was on loan at Burnley in the second half of last season, and made 15 league appearances. The Clarets had an option to buy, but it wasn’t exercised after their relegation from the Premier League.

Assignon has returned to Stade Rennais, where he’s now training under Julien Stéphan’s orders. His future is likely to be away from the Ligue 1 side and Aston Villa have emerged as an option.

The Frenchman’s contract lasts until 2027 and his desire is to change clubs this summer. Stade Rennais are also looking to part ways with the fullback. The report states they want €10m, and this would be a reasonable fee for Aston Villa.

AS Roma have shown interest in the 24-year-old, and he already held talks with Daniele De Rossi and their sporting director, Florent Ghisolfi. The Serie A side have to be wary of the competition from Aston Villa, who have now ‘entered the fray’.

Unai Emery’s side have positioned themselves in the transfer race, and they’ll be pleased to know that Assignon and Stade Rennais are looking forward to a transfer this summer.
