Aston Villa have paused Enzo Barrenechea’s potential loan move to Valencia, asking for more time to consider their options before sanctioning it.
That’s according to Marca, who report that the loan deal is now ‘up in the air’ after a last-minute turnaround from Aston Villa.
The newspaper reports that everything was agreed, and the midfielder was set to travel on Thursday for a medical.
Aston Villa, though, have informed Valencia that they need to rethink the situation due to a series of ‘internal reasons’ related to injuries. In simpler terms, they may be thinking of keeping Barrenechea because of injury issues in the squad.
The operation to take him to Valencia is not yet definitively broken but the matter has become complicated.
The Spanish side wanted Barrenechea to reinforce their midfield for manager Ruben Baraja, who had worked on the operation personally. He was excited to have the player at his disposal.
He now needs to wait and see what Aston Villa decide to do as they’ve decided to hit the brakes on the deal.
There’s every chance that it can be revived later this week, but for now it seems Barrenechea won’t be making the move to Spain.
