Last summer, Aston Villa’s Philippe Coutinho joined Vasco da Gama on loan and hasn’t yet lived up to the expectations so far, partly due to fitness concerns.
The attacking midfielder has managed seven goals and an assist since returning to the club. His mixed performances haven’t stopped him from attracting interest from elsewhere.
That’s according to RTI Esporte, who state CF Monterrey have their eyes set on the Aston Villa.
Monterrey contacted the 32-year-old’s agent last week to find out the fee needed to sign him. His loan deal at the Brazilian club lasts until the end of this season.
Last Wednesday, Vasco da Gama executive director of football Маrcelo Sant’Ana stated his side will definitely try to extend his stay. Two days later, manager Fábio Carille said the club have to look into their finances before considering retaining Coutinho.
RTI have found out that the former Liverpool man ‘doesn’t want to leave’ Vasco da Gama. This is why he isn’t entertaining the Mexican club’s approach and ‘rules out’ the transfer.
The report adds Coutinho asked his representatives to ‘signal to Aston Villa his desire’ to continue at Vasco da Gama, and the Villans are yet to accept his wish.
His contract at Villa Park expires in 2026 and Unai Emery’s side could look to offload him permanently in the summer.
